Coleman Elementary in Baltimore, they put these students in the Mindful Moment Room, a space for misbehaving kids to calm and recenter themselves through breathing exercises and meditation. The space was created through a partnership with the Holistic Life Foundation, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that’s committed to nurturing the wellness of both children and adults in underserved communities. The Mindful Moment Room is not just for kids with disciplinary issues. Children suffering from anxiety, headaches, stomach problems, and stress are also referred to the room for twenty-minute sessions with mindfulness instructors, which include five minutes of targeted discussion and fifteen minutes of mindfulness practice – yoga or breathing exercises depending on the situation. It would be an understatement to say that typhoons aren’t typically associated with something positive. In the natural world, they cause mass destruction, wiping out entire communities and leaving many bodies in their wake. But a Japanese engineer has constructed a wind turbine capable of harnessing the immense power of these storms in order to turn it into useful energy. If his project is successful, a single typhoon would have the ability to power Japan for 50 years. “Typhoons are normally nothing but a disaster,” noted Atsushi Shimizu, the inventor of the world’s first typhoon turbine. Japan is no stranger to the destruction of typhoons. In fact, the country has already seen six typhoons in 2016 alone. Shimizu’s highly durable eggbeater-shaped device was constructed to counteract Japan’s  energy shortage , which has been an issue since the Fukushima disaster back in 2011. “Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it’s just not utilized,” Shimizu said .

I am lucky to have been blessed with 20-20 vision thus far in my life. Since that’s the case, my familiarity with the eye industry has never extended beyond seeing an optometrist — and I hope it stays that way. It wasn’t until a couple of months ago that I peeked a bit further behind the curtain, when my girlfriend found herself needing new glasses. As her partner in life, I was tasked with providing my “professional” opinion on which frames she should pick, a simple enough duty that become a pretty eye-opening adventure (pun only partially intended). I had always known that glasses were not a particularly cheap item to buy, but I had no idea how expensive even the simplest, generic pair could be. Even more shocking was the vast range in price for frames that seemed identical to one another in so many ways. Are these glasses worth more than a minuscule fraction of the final price that we pay as consumers? Or is corporate America flexing its power once again to take advantage of us?
