100% Self-Reliant Town in the Netherlands Will Live Off-Grid, Producing All of Its Own Energy and Food

Image
We only have one planet, and so we should use it wisely. You know, kind of like that saying about our health. Well, some of you may have heard that one, and if not, I believe you still get the gist of it. Think about this: our planet and its resources are like our body in a way, and so harsh treatment will eventually wear it out… Unless, of course, we change our mindset about almost everything. So, what should we do about it? The Netherlands may have an answer to our predicament. It isn’t a new concept, mind you, but it’s certainly a rather renovated idea. Like the Amish, this project provides the means to be self-reliant, but unlike the simplicity of the Amish, this concept retains high-tech capabilities. Self-sustainability When it comes to being self-reliant, we’re talking about whole villages, not just one home. After all, self-sustainable living can be accomplished more efficiently by working together, family with family, friend with friend. That’s why, a community pilot proje

How A Family Of 7 Lives Comfortably In A 900-Square-Foot Off The Grid Home collective-evolution

Image
I can’t count how many times I’ve heard someone say they are looking to move into a bigger house because the one they currently reside in is too small for their family. I don’t question or judge it, especially given the common desire for more space, but the growing popularity of living off the grid truly puts things into perspective. We are conditioned to want more, and to believe we need more. But this family of seven from Northern British Columbia, Canada has debunked this idea that proper space is found in a big home. In this video, Jeff, Rose, and their five girls live completely off the grid on 40-acres of land. Building their home for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof, they are among a movement of people looking to live more sustainably from the inside out. “It wasn’t about getting rich, it was about needing less money,” Jeff says of how their desire to move off the grid came to be

Smaller & Smarter: The Significance of Intelligently Designed Things collective-evolution

Image
One of the buzzwords at technology conferences has been the so-called “Internet of Things,”  which means using sensors and embedded processors to identify objects on the network through their IP addresses and thereby monitoring, controlling them, and exchanging information. As with much technology, the full ramifications of this movement will unfold through the development of more and more connected objects exchanging data, presumably also with living things like us. Another aspect of this, of course, is miniaturization. We have already seen how our phones have become computers with more processing power than the desktops we had a decade or so ago; indeed some of them now have the graphics capability to present virtual reality . And while there has been much talk of nanotechnology and quantum computing, the extent to which entire operating systems can now fit on a small circuit board or even a chip is remarkable. In a project for a friend I was tasked to research network scanners t

NFL: The Game Destroying The Brains & Lives Of Some Of America’s Finest Athletes collective-evolution

“In football, one has to expect that almost every play of every game and practice, they are going to be hitting their heads against each other. Each time that happens, it’s around 20 G’s or more. That is the equivalent of driving a car at 35 miles into a brick wall. A thousand to 1500 times per year.”  —Robert Stern, PhD Neuropsychologist (featured in the frontline documentary Why The NFL Should Be Scared Of Chris Borland ) Can you imagine being hit in the head constantly with an impact similar to that of hitting a brick wall, and how you might feel the more it happened? Each one of those hits could be potentially damaging for you, let alone having them happen again and again, year after year. If you’ve ever watched an NFL game, you’re likely unsurprised to hear how dangerous this sport can be. If those big shoulder guards and helmets are any indication, this is not a sport for the faint of heart. It’s rough, requires enormous strength, speed, and agility, and only a select few can

Why We Need A Food Revolution & How “Hospital Farms” Could Fuel It collective-evolution

The food industry may pose the single greatest threat to human health today. The amount of people suffering from obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other food-related illnesses has skyrocketed since we created what is known as the “global food system.” As globalization increased and technology advanced, we went from growing our own food and raising our own cattle to developing a multi-trillion dollar business. Food has gone from representing a method of sustaining ourselves to becoming a global industry fuelled by corruption and profitability. Most conventional food products, especially in North America, contain dairy, sugar, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), chemicals, toxins, and other ingredients harmful to human health. The difficulty of trying to be healthy If you read the label on any given food product, you may not even be able to  recognize  some of the ingredients. Even something as basic as sugar can be difficult to identify because of the number of alternative names

Social Media For Viral Social Change collective-evolution

Once upon a time, running a campaign meant knocking on doors, picking up the phone and taking out ad space — anything to alert the public to your cause. More often than not, the time, effort, and money invested in traditional campaigning methods far outweighs the results, and the capacity of a group or individual to instigate change depends largely on the resources at their disposal. Enter the age of the internet — and social media in particular — and this is no longer an issue. Today, a message, movement, or debate can go viral in minutes, and it’s not only politicians and corporate brands that are using the internet to further their cause. Social media is increasingly being used to establish and drive humanitarian initiatives, showing just how the digital world can effectively translate into real-life social change. Campaigning in the Internet Age: What’s New? Never before has the world been so connected. With free social media platforms, an open blogosphere, and ready-made templa

How Quantum Mechanics Is Changing Everything We Know About Our Lives collective-evolution

Quantum physics is the new physics that is pointing to something far greater than the materialistic world that we once believed to be the basis of our existence. Not only is it disproving our original perception of space and time, but it is opening the doors to the possibility of time travel, telepathy, and consciousness creating our reality. Below are some of the major properties of quantum mechanics and the implications they have on the world around us. You won’t be disappointed! 1. Quantum Entanglement:  When two sub-atomic particles cross paths with one another, they become “entangled.” This means that their properties become linked with one another. When these entangled particles are separated (even millions of miles or light-years apart), what happens to one particle  instantaneously  happens to the other particle. What this means : This means that information is travelling far faster than the speed of light to be communicated instantaneously across vast distances. This defi

9 Things That Happen When You Stop Eating Meat collective-evolution

Image
This article was inspired by   Michelle McMacken  article “7 Things That Happen When You Stop Eating meat.”  A bit more information has been added in along with a few slightly different points. She’s an MD, a board-certified internal medicine physician and an assistant professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine: “[T]he protein found in whole plant foods protects us from many chronic diseases. It’s well established in scientific literature that a meat-free diet, when done correctly, offers tremendous health benefits. The notion that meat is necessary for human health is a myth that continues to pervade popular culture, but public perception is slowly shifting, and new research is showing that even our ancestors did not exclusively (or even predominantly) eat meat. While we don’t mean to say that eating any meat is unhealthy, we do wish to call attention to the growing body of research making clear that vegan and vegetarian diets are optimal for good health. 3 Herbs & 6 Foods You Can Use To Properly Cleanse Your Kidneys collective-evolution

Kidney cleanses have been used in traditional medicine to rid the kidneys of calcium deposits for hundreds of years. Such calcium accumulations can result in kidney stones, which are often excruciating to pass. The kidneys are intensely fragile organs which filter the blood 24 hours a day throughout the body’s lifetime. Consuming the best herbs, fruits, and vegetables for kidney health will work to keep your kidneys functioning at their best. To learn exactly how to do a kidney cleanse properly, safely, and effectively, continue on to this easy-to-follow guide: The Best Herbs For A Kidney Cleanse The three best herbs for a kidney cleanse are: stinging nettle, burdock, and rehmannia. 1. Stinging nettle Stinging nettle was used in medieval Europe as a diuretic, as well as to treat joint pain. Today, it is used to treat urinary tract infections  and hay fever (allergic rhinitis), or in compresses or creams for treating joint pain, sprains and strains, tendonitis, and insect bites.

Video: Pit Bull Rescued From Dog Fighting Ring Now Cuddles Kittens collective-evolution

Image
In an ongoing video series, dog-loving website  BarkPost has given a very special pooch the opportunity to participate in “Dog’s Best Day” and bask in 24 hours of pampering. Named Cherry Garcia, the chosen pooch was among the more than 50 pit bulls who were removed from an illegal dog fighting ring set up and maintained by NFL quarterback Michael Vick at his Virginia property back in 2007. Since 2010, Cherry has been fully rehabilitated and is now living with a loving and supportive family. Most people assume that any dog that was a part of a fighting ring should be put down, but it is important to remember that they are the victim in the situation and with enough love, care, and attention these dogs can fully recover. If you met Cherry today you would never believe that he was once trained for violence, as his current loves include swimming, playing, and snuggling kittens. “Cherry just loves his kittens, he has two cats now and he loves to play with them,” Paul Fiaccone, Cherry’s o

How Rich People Are Using Philanthropy As A Disguise to Take Over the World collective-evolution

Society is made up of the collaborated efforts of people in the form of institutions. Institutions are investments people put in, and those with the most power to invest have the greatest influence on society. Behind The Mask Of the Cabal Despite the seeming equality we have achieved, the rich elite haven’t gone anywhere. They have managed to maintain their existence thousands of years throughout history, including in the modern era. They were even there at the dawn of modern day advancement, in the beginnings of the industrial revolution, where society witnessed its biggest growth in history. The first aristocratic class planted the initial seeds, influencing the direction of our society in the most fundamental ways, just a century ago. In time, they grew by creating most of the major sectors in finance, education, media, and more, shaping society into what it is today. If there is anywhere to look at today for questions or answers for our very imperfect world, it is at those who cr

10 Effective Ways To Use Vinegar As A Household Cleaner (VIDEO) collective-evolution

While I doubt that many of us enjoy doing household chores in general, what I personally dislike about them (beyond the sheer drudgery) is the number of chemicals they tend to involve. From window sprays and bleach to toilet bowl cleaners and everything in between, they all seem to be  filled with chemicals I’d prefer to avoid handling and inhaling. While more natural and eco-friendly alternatives continue to pop up on store shelves worldwide, they often cost significantly more than their chemically-laden counterparts. So while I do encourage people to purchase these products — both as an investment in our health and in the well-intentioned companies making them — I also love to discover life hacks that empower us all to step away from the conventional, regardless of our financial state. Here is a quick list (in video and written form) outlining 10 simple vinegar-based life hacks for cleaning around the house: 1.  Cleaning Out Your Iron If your clothing iron doesn’t seem to ste
